Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctival membrane covering the white portion of the eye. It may be caused by allergies or infections. It can be very contagious and is often spread through direct contact with eye secretions.

Bacterial pink eye is caused by staphylococcal or streptococcal bacteria, this typically happens owing to things like touching your eyes with unclean hands, sharing makeup, or having physical contact with somebody who might also have pinkeye.

Viral conjunctivitis usually starts in one eye and then infects the other eye within a few days.

Chemical conjunctivitis may be caused by polluted air, swimming pool chlorine, Chemical exposure.

Allergic Conjunctivitis maybe caused if they come in contact with a substance, they’re allergic to, like pollen or if you wear hard contact lenses, or soft contact lenses that aren’t replaced often enough.

Symptoms

1. Reddishness, irritation and itchiness in one or both the eyes.
2. Swelling of the conjunctiva.
3. Increased tear discharge.
4. Feeling of a foreign object in your eye or the urge to rub your eye.

Preventive Measures

1. When possible, avoid touching your eyes with unwashed hands.
2. Clean tissues and towels must be used to wipe your face and eyes.
3. Try not to share cosmetic, particularly eyeliner or mascara. Avoid sharing towels or washcloths.
4. Avoiding poorly equipped lens worn in eye.

Treatment
Often, allergic conjunctivitis resolves itself without any medical intervention. Antihistamines can help reduce itching and burning sensations associated with allergic conjunctivitis. Bacterial conjunctival infection can be treated with antibiotics eye drops.

However, if your symptoms persist, you may benefit from an ophthalmic prescription.
